Model Year Changes

Saab 9-3.

1998

This is the first model year of the Saab 9-3 which includes over 1,100 "under the skin" changes to the chassis and suspension of it's predecessor the Saab 900 (1994-1998). The visible external changes of note are a new grille with "wing" aerodynamic curved styling, similar to the recently introduced Saab 9-5 and the rear third "high-level" brakelight is moved from top of boot ridge to top of rear window for better visibility for traffic behind.

9-3 entry-level models gain better quality velour trim, a rear spoiler, remote control central locking and colour-keyed door mirrors. 9-3 'S' models gain alloy wheels and colour-keyed mirrors.

9-3 'SE' models gain sports body styling, cruise control, front fog lights, a trip computer and 16-inch alloy wheels whilst 9-3 Aero models gain new body styling - as seen on the now discontinued Viggen models - and a two-tone leather sports interior, 17-inch alloy wheels and traction control.

A new 2.0-litre light pressure turbo engine is now available in the 9-3 range; this 150 bhp unit delivers 10% more torque, lower carbon dioxide emissions and 5% lower fuel consumption than the 154 bhp unit it replaces.
