Saab 900 (1994 to 1997) History
Model Years 1994 to 1997

The new Saab 900 made its debut in front of the press and 35,000 residents of Trollhättan, in the town's main square, on 21 July 1993.

The new 900 was the first completely new model since GM (General Motors) took a 50% stake in Saab Automobile AB in 1990. It was also the first Saab for a decade since the "Type Four" collaboration with Fiat/Lancia, that produced the Saab 9000 in the early 1980s.

Saab's sales had been flagging in the late eighties and early nineties. The 9000 was almost a decade old with one facelift; and the 900 was largely derived from the 99 - a car introduced in 1967.

It was not a painless transition to GM. At the close of the 1980s it took some 110 hours to build a Saab - a time that had to shrink to just 30 hours. Nevertheless, the new 900 was received enthusiastically by press and public alike with over 3,000 orders being received within the first ten days.
